Sayuri Chibana is a master of Akebi-ryu School of Ryukyu Buyo and trained under Hiroko Koja. She received a bachelor’s degree in Japanese music from the School of Music, Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts in 1998. She is a member of Ryukyu Buyo Preservation Association, and received Encouragement Award by Okinawa Times Geijutsu Sensho Award. Her recent credits include the Okinawa Performing Arts North America Tour in Commemoration of G8 Kyushu-Okinawa Summit in 2000 (Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC Toronto and Ottawa), Ryukyu Buyo “Tanchamee, Taiko-bayashi, Modori-kago” and Kumiodori “Nido-tekiuchi” at National Bunrau Theatre in 2018, the special performance of “Taiten Hoshuku no Geinou” and Ryukyu Buyo “Yuchidaki” at Yokohama Noh theater in 2019, and “Yurateikuwashiba - Uruma Saiyuki,” new work produced by National Theater Okinawa in 2020.
